Gold Star Mothers, Family Day Is Sept. 25th
By Marian Paxton

Covington, VA (Sept. 22, 2022) - Every year the Alleghany Highlands Gold Star Mothers and Families honor their loved ones who were killed in the line of duty or in military training. The organization was started to support mothers who had lost children in the war.

The grief of those left behind is profound. Back in 1917 Grace Darling Seibold recognized a need for comfort and support to mothers who were never going to see their child again and organized Gold Star Mothers. The membership was initially limited to mothers and then was increased to include anyone who lost a family member. These members included their sons, daughters, husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, brothers or sisters who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The combined mission of Gold Star Mothers and Families is to remember, to educate and to promote patriotism. This year we honor them on September 25th.

Throughout the years the ways The Gold Star family has honored their loved ones have changed. In 1918 the members wore a black band on their arm. Today the blue military Star worn on the lapel to signify that they have someone serving in the military is covered over with a Gold Star.

If you see someone wearing a Gold Star offer them condolences and thank them for the sacrifices they have made. God bless these families and their “soldier” who gave all to the United States of America.

If you are interested in learning more about our local Gold Star Families please contact the Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society. Their office hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10:00 to 3:00 PM and is located on 515 East Pine Street Jeter-Watson, Covington VA.
