Monday Musicals@ The Masonic Film Series

Clifton Forge, VA (Jan. 19, 2022) - The Historic Masonic Theatre has announced a new film series in addition to the free weekly Sunday matinees. The “Monday Musicals@ The Masonic Film Series” musicals will begin at 7:00 pm on the second Monday of each month in 2022.

With the advent of sound in the late 1920’s musical film was a natural progression from the staged musical. Beginning with the Jazz Singer in 1927, the race was on to make movie musicals.

The Monday Musicals series concentrates mainly on the 1940’s through the early 1950’s with the exception of Paint Your Wagon 1966 and That’s Entertainment, a 1974 documentary about the golden age of the movie musical.

“Choosing which films to show in the series was challenging”, Executive Director Justin Reiter said. “There are just so many great movie musicals to choose from.” In the end Reiter decided to go with some of the most notable musicals for the first year of the series.

The series will include favorites such as An American in Paris 1951 and Meet Me in St. Louis 1944.

The Masonic Theatre has been presenting movies for nearly 100 years. “It’s in the building’s DNA to show movies”, Reiter added. “The really fun part is to think about the films in the series getting a second run sixty years after they were first shown at the Theatre!”

The Monday Musical lineup includes: February 14, Guys and Dolls; March 14, Paint Your Wagon; April 11, Easter Parade; May 9, On The Town; June 13, An American in Paris; July 11, Meet Me in St. Louis; August 8, Blue Skies; September 12, In the Good Old Summertime; October 10, That’s Entertainment; November 12, Holiday Inn; December 12, White Christmas.

The Monday Musicals@The Masonic are free and begin at 7:00 p.m. Concessions are available for purchase, including alcohol and non-alcohol beverages.
