AHS Recognized As Region 6 Winner Of Career & Tech. Education Award

Valley Ridge, VA (June 24, 2020) - The Virginia Department of Education and Alleghany County Public Schools are proud to announcement that Alleghany High School is the Region 6 winner of the 2020 Career and Technical Education Creating Excellence Program Award. The creating excellence awards are presented annually by the Virginia Department of Education to recognize exemplary programs and partnerships that promote excellence in career and technical education.

Alleghany High School’s program entitled “Something to Cluck About” in the Agriculture pathway was the specific award recipient. The “Something to Cluck About” program started early in the spring semester of 2018 at Alleghany High School in the Introduction to Animal Systems class in combination with the Future Farmers of America club (FFA). Students were interested in helping their rural and socio-economically impoverished community members develop sustainable living. The idea was born that if you can grow it and/or raise it, then you can sustain life with minimal financial burden. So, the students and club members partnered with the local Tractor Supply to raise chickens to test their concept. Students developed their hypothesis, outlined the program protocols, refined the driving question, cultivated the chickens, documented the methodology, tracked data, maintained biosecurity measures, monitored and enhanced nutrition (added a plant tower to grow and add extra nutrition), worked with community partners, presented their findings at the local, state, and national levels, and continue to adapt and advance this project today with other indigenous animals and plants with expanded partnerships.

â€śI am so proud of my high school team. The students truly created a sustainable program to help their community. I am thankful for the partnership with Tractor Supply of Covington, as this would not have been possible without them. I want to give a special congratulations to Ms. Jackie Almarode, Mr. Robert Tucker, Mrs. Teresa Reed, Mr. Lucas Conner, Mr. Dwayne Ross, and Mr. Seth Bradley for helping to make this award a reality and for always providing the best education to our students,” stated Kelly Huff, Director of Secondary Instruction.

Due to the COVID-19 situation, Alleghany High School was not recognized on June 11, 2020, in Richmond as the recipient of this award; however, the Alleghany County School Board will recognize the high school team and Tractor Supply of Covington at its monthly meeting in August.
