'Lift Every Vocie' Concert Set Sun., Nov. 10th

 
Covington, VA (Oct. 31, 2019) - Musical guests from the American Spiritual Ensemble will be in the area next weekend for a community workshop and concert called "Lift Every Voice".

The event is sponsored by the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council and will feature the Resurrecting Praise Community Choir and members of other local church choirs and musical guests. The concert is the first of three weekends of activities that are part of an American Evolution project hosted by the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and funded by the Virginia Department of Tourism titled: "A Journey Home: 400 Years of Culture, Customs, and Cuisines"

Activities begin on Saturday morning November 9 at Covington High School where Hope Koehler will conduct a rehearsal workshop at 11:00 am.

Ms. Koehler serves on the music faculty at West Virginia University as an associate professor of voice . She has visited our area several times as a primary soloist with the American Spiritual Ensemble. She also presented a concert as part of First Presbyterian Church's Music on the Corner Series. She says, "I'm excited to work with the nice people in the Alleghany Highlands. They have always been so warm and welcoming to us and I know there is a lot of talent in that region."

On Sunday November 10, Dr. Everett McCorvey will arrive for a 1:00 pm rehearsal and conduct the concert which begins at 3:00 pm. Dr. McCorvey is Professor of Voice and Director of the Opera department at the University of Kentucky. He also directs the National Chorale in Washing ton, DC. He founded the American Spiritual Ensemble in 1995 in an effort to preserve the Negro Spiritual as an art form. Its members have sung in theaters and opera houses across the United States as well as Italy, Germany, Britain, Scotland, Spain and Japan.

The Resurrecting Praise Community Choir welcomes participation of other local singers. Anyone wishing to participate in the workshop and sing in the concert must contact the Arts Council in advance by calling 962-2787.
