Featuring Music of Rachmaninoff, Medtner, and Shostakovich

Hot Springs, VA – Garth Newel Music Center presents the third concert in the new Emerging Artist Alumni Concert Series on Saturday, May 18 at 5 pm, followed by light refreshments.

Pianist Haeshin Shin will be joined by cellist Jacob Wunsch, and soprano Elena Mindlina, in The Russian Masters, a concert featuring music of Rachmaninoff, Medtner, and Shostakovich.

Shin and Wunsch are both alumni of the 2014 Emerging Artist Fellowship Program at Garth Newel, a four-week, intensive chamber music program for string players and pianists ages 18-28. Highly competitive fellowships are awarded to eleven dedicated instrumentalists from around the world, who receive lessons and mentoring from the award-winning Garth Newel Piano Quartet and other world class artists and teachers. Throughout the four-week program, the fellows perform free concerts throughout the region, forging strong connections with the community. Haeshin Shin was the recipient of the Hella and Cecil Armstrong Fellowship, and Jacob Wunsch the Miriam Hayes DiCecco fellowship.

Since her time as a fellow at Garth Newel, Haeshin Shin completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Boston University, performed at prominent places around the world, and founded the Medtner Society of Korea in 2016, for which she serves as Artistic Director.

Jacob Wunsch completed his graduate studies at the University of Michigan, and earned a second Master's degree and Artist Certificate from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Netherlands. He performs internationally as an orchestral and chamber musician, and has researched and transcribed works for cello ensemble.

Soprano Elena Mindlina has an accomplished career as a recitalist, recording artist, and teacher in both Russia and the USA, and has appeared at such prestigious venues as Lincoln Center’s Merkin Hall, Steinway Hall, Yamaha Hall, The Town Hall, and The National Opera Center Recital Hall.

The Emerging Artist Concert Series allows talented alumni of Garth Newel’s flagship program to return to the community of Garth Newel and share their growth and artistry.
