Permanent Medication Drop Box to be installed at Alleghany County Sherriff’s Office

Covington, VA (Jan. 7, 2019) - Alleghany Highlands Community Services, Alleghany Highlands Healthy Youth Coalition, and Alleghany County Sherriff’s Office are collaborating to install a permanent medication drop box. An opening day event will be held on January 16, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Sherriff’s Office in Covington, VA.

Medication drop boxes are a safe way for individuals to dispose of expired, unused, or unwanted medication such as antibiotics, contraceptives, prescription painkillers, and over the counter medicines. These drop boxes help keep the community and environment safe.

Individuals often think that flushing their medicine is a safe disposal option, however, flushed medications have been found in lakes, rivers, and streams. Using these medication drop boxes can also help prevent unused medicine from getting into the wrong hands. The opioid epidemic continues to have a huge impact in Southwest Virginia.

Alleghany Highlands Community Services, Alleghany Highlands Healthy Youth Coalition, and Alleghany County Sherriff’s Office recognize the importance of having a safe way to dispose of medications in our community and have provided a new resource to the Alleghany Highlands. Freebies, prevention information, medication lock boxes and gun locks will be given out during the opening day event. Everyone is welcome. The medication drop box will be available after January 16.
