Alleghany County Pursuit And Crash Results In Drug Charges

Alleghany County, VA (April 11, 2018) - Two Covington, Va., residents are facing charges following a pursuit and eventual crash in Alleghany County on Wednesday (April 11, 2018).

Virginia State Police were conducting a checking detail on Route 600 at the intersection of Route 661 when, at approximately 1:40 p.m., a 2003 Ford Mustang stopped in the roadway and refused to continue forward. As the troopers motioned for the vehicle to pull forward, the Mustang accelerated through the checking detail causing the troopers to jump out of the way to avoid being struck. The Mustang then sped away. The troopers initiated a pursuit in an attempt to stop the fleeing Mustang.

The pursuit continued onto Route 687, where the Mustang intentionally struck a State Police patrol car. The Mustang continued onto Route 641 reaching speeds of up to 80 mph. When the Mustang rammed the trooper’s vehicle a second time, the driver of the Mustang lost control. The Mustang ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a rock embankment and overturned.

The Mustang’s driver, Michael Lee Tucker Jr., 35, of Covington, Va., was not wearing his seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He then attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was quickly apprehended by the troopers. He was transported to Alleghany Lewis Gale Hospital, where he was treated and released. Tucker is now being held at the Alleghany County Jail. Tucker was charged with one felony count of eluding police, one felony count of assault on a police officer, driving under the influence of drugs (DUID), and reckless driving.

The passenger of the Mustang, Sharon Renee Hoke, 38, of Covington, Va., was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening, injuries. Hoke was charged with possession of methamphetamine.

The incident remains under investigation.

No Virginia State Police personnel were injured during the course of the pursuit.
