Alleghany Highlands YMCA Partners with Alleghany County Public Schools to Provide Swim Lessons

Low Moor, VA (Nov. 1, 2017) - Alleghany County Public Schools’ second graders are receiving free swimming lessons this school year at the Alleghany Highlands YMCA, thanks to a grant provide by the YMCA of the USA.

“This was a great opportunity for our 2nd graders to learn how to swim or to advance their swimming ability,” stated Gene Kotulka, Superintendent of Alleghany County Public Schools. “I appreciate the YMCA’s willingness to collaborate with us in the endeavor and for all that they did to make it happen.”  The Alleghany Highlands YMCA provided the grant, the certified swim instructors, the lifeguards, and the facility.

The school division and YMCA have collaborated on other projects and will continue to work together to benefit the children of the Alleghany Highlands. “Educating children to be safe around water is just as important as teaching them to look both ways before they cross the street,” said Jennifer Unroe, CEO of the Alleghany Highlands YMCA.  “The YMCA teaches children of all ages and backgrounds that water should be fun, not feared, and this practice not only saves lives, it builds confidence.”

The grant was for this school year only and both Alleghany County Public Schools and the YMCA would like to continue the program next year.  If you are interested in providing financial assistance to the program, please contact Gene Kotulka at 540-863-1811 or Jennifer Unroe at 540-862-8677.
