Postcards from the Past

Clifton Forge, VA (Oct. 16, 2017) - The Clifton Forge Public Library is pleased to host “Postcards from the Past,” presented by Clifton Forge resident, Susan Haley.

The program will focus on Clifton Forge history, but will also include the surrounding area. The postcards reflect “a small Victorian community through more modern current times,” says Mrs. Haley. “Some of the postcards,” she adds, “are vintage and to my knowledge have not been published before.”

The program will be held in the Michael Armstrong Community Room of the Clifton Forge Public Library. It will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24.

Susan is an avid Clifton Forge fan who is amazed at the town’s history. Although her family moved to Clifton Forge in 1998, she has been collecting postcards of the area since the late 1990s. However, her interest goes even further back as her family regularly vacationed at Whispering Pines as early as 1985.

“For the first couple years that we vacationed here,” Susan reminisces, “we never went beyond Kroger’s and Family Dollar.” One day Kevin, her husband, went to the store without her and came back home with coffee from Doody Morris’ 7/11. Susan was shocked and exclaimed, “No! Where’s there a 7/11?” Kevin said, “There’s a whole town beyond Kroger’s and Family Dollar.”

A couple years later, they discovered Covington when Pat Hostetter asked for a ride to K-Mart. Susan’s amazed response was, “There’s a K-Mart here? Where?”

Mrs. Haley began searching and researching the area more diligently. She and Kevin “like to visit the parks, historic sites, cemeteries – everything that makes a town a town.”

Susan says she had “a sense of Clifton Forge before we moved here because we had been coming here for so long.” She continues, “Also, a friend would save all the newspapers and mail them in a box to me every month. I had read all the local news, all of the Shadow’s articles, Horton Beirne’s columns – everything. I already knew about Clifton Forge when we moved here.”

When asked what she likes best about Clifton Forge, Susan doesn’t hesitate. “I like the pace. Kevin and I really like the slower, kinder pace. And no huge lines. Not being tenth in line at the bank. I just like Clifton Forge.”

Mrs. Haley invites those in attendance to add to the discussion with more history and with stories of their own. She wistfully concludes that she hopes people will “perhaps remember things they have forgotten and find gems they weren’t aware of.”

Admission is free.

The Friends of the Library will provide light refreshments.

The Clifton Forge Public Library is located at 535 Church Street.
