New Outdoor Survival Skills Course Starts April 5 at DSLCC

Clifton Forge, VA (March 21, 2017) - A new course, “Outdoor Survival Skills”, is being offered by the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Non-Credit program in April. The primary instructor is Michael Hayslett, a local “mountain man” who has enjoyed a 30-year career in outdoor recreation, natural resource conservation and higher education.
The class will meet for five sessions beginning April 5. The first four will be held on Wednesday evenings, from 6 to 9 pm, in Room 375, Scott Hall, on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus. The last session, a field exercise, will be held on Saturday, April 29, from 9 am to noon at Douthat State Park near Clifton Forge.
“Safety and enjoyment during extended stays in the wild involve confident command of specialized knowledge, skills, and use of appropriate gear,” says Hayslett. “Ensuring one’s survival and even comfort outdoors is essential for recreational enjoyment and ensuring preparedness for unexpected emergencies. These classes will increase your knowledge and practice of outdoor living skills and survival techniques for recreational use and disaster preparedness.”
The schedule: April 5 – Introduction, Principles, Technology versus Knowledge; April 12 – Shelter and Water; April 19 – Fire and Food; April 26 – Orienteering and Wilderness First-aid; April 29 – Field Exercise at Douthat State Park.
Each of the four classroom sessions is $45; the field exercise alone is $75. The fee for all five sessions is $225. A one-time $25 materials fee covers all five sessions.
Hayslett has been a park ranger, wildlife biologist, hiking guide and professor of biology and environmental science. He grew up hiking, hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, caving and exploring nature in the Alleghenies but he has also trekked throughout the wilds of the Eastern U.S., the Rockies and Alaska. Hayslett will also be teaching another new DSLCC non-credit course, “Great Appalachian Hikes,” in May and June.
