DSLCC Foundation Announces Ovella Worsham Scholarship

Clifton Forge, VA (Feb. 22, 2017) - The DSLCC Educational Foundation is proud to announce the availability of over 100 scholarship opportunities, including a new scholarship this year – the Ovella Worsham Educators’ Scholarship. The scholarship was established with funds from the Ovella Worsham Fund at Temple Baptist Church, in keeping with the wishes of the estate plans of Ms. Worsham, who passed away on December 30, 2015.

Ovella F. Worsham, a native of Russell County, Virginia, was a life-long educator. She began her career in the Russell County School System upon her graduation from Radford College. In 1968, she moved to Covington, where she became a music teacher with the Covington City School system and taught for over 30 years. She was a long-time member of Temple Baptist Church in Covington, where she taught Sunday school, directed the choir, and worked with youth for many years. Ovella traveled overseas on several Baptist mission trips, including trips to Mexico, South America, and Ukraine. Her passion for education inspired her to make provisions in her will to establish a scholarship for those students seeking a career as educators, as well as a fund to assist church members willing to participate in church mission work.

In memory of her dedication to education, the scholarship is available to students who plan to major in education and who have a GPA of 2.75. Students may be graduating high school or homeschool seniors, continuing students at DSLCC, or non-traditional students. While preference is given to attendees of Temple Baptist Church, anyone may apply. Two awards are available each year to residents of Alleghany County and the city of Covington.

John Stone, Executor of the Worsham Estate and DSLCC Educational Foundation Board member, commented, “We at Temple Baptist Church valued Ovella’s commitment to the Church and to education; we are so pleased with the opportunity to honor her legacy and her wishes by contributing to the education and training of our future educators.”

Students may apply for this opportunity, as well as more than 100 other scholarship opportunities, and the need-based Dabney Promise Program (which covers full tuition, up to 15 credits per semester, and provides a book stipend) by completing one, online general application.

The Foundation is now accepting applications, which are due on April 3rd for the 2017-2018 academic year. All DSLCC students and prospective DSLCC students are welcome to apply, including graduating high school and homeschooled seniors, continuing students at Dabney, and non-traditional students (those who did not pursue college studies immediately following high school). The application may be found at www.dslcc.edu/scholarships. Please note that applicants must first apply to Dabney to obtain a Dabney user name and password, which will be used to log in to the scholarship platform. In addition, the Foundation Office will correspond with prospective scholarship recipients via their Dabney email accounts, so it is necessary for prospective scholarship recipients to regularly monitor the accounts.

The Foundation is offering workshops to assist applicants in completing the online application. The workshops are as follows:

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC – Tuesday, March 7th, DSLCC Clifton Forge Campus, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Warren Hall, Room 416; Wednesday, March 8th, DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Room 907

FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS - Friday, February 24th, Covington High School students; Tuesday, February 28th and Thursday, March 2nd, Alleghany High School students; Wednesday, March 8th, Parry McCluer High School students; a session was previously held at James River High School on February 10th; Bath County High School and Rockbridge County High School sessions to be determined.

Since its inception in 1980, the DSLCC Educational Foundation – due to its most generous donors – has awarded more than 1,100 student scholarships, worth more than $1.7 million, to students from Alleghany, Bath County, Covington, James River, Parry McCluer, and Rockbridge County high schools, as well as non-traditional and continuing students at DSLCC. Last year alone, the Foundation awarded $225,000 to approximately 100 scholarship students.

Established as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation exists solely to support and promote Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. The Educational Foundation’s primary focus is to keep education affordable through the awarding of student scholarships and to provide students the support they need to achieve their goals. The Foundation also supports the college through the purchase of enhanced technology and classroom equipment and assists in funding innovative programming.
